Climate Change the Reality and Dangers
UN Intergovernmental Climate Change (IPCC) Report
In a statement issued by the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), the CEO of SACCI Mr Alan Mukoki said:
Given the urgent alarm raised by the recently released UN Intergovernmental Climate Change (IPCC) Report, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry would like to urge all social partners, in particular the government and broad industry to now move this matter up the agenda of the most pressing priorities for actioning, in conjunction with economic growth, eradication of high unemployment and poverty alleviation.
As the IPCC Report is showing, the science is not in dispute.
We call upon all stakeholders and the broad South African leadership to elevate the issue of global warming to one of the measurable key performance areas.
To this end the time has now come for commerce, industry, and government to start reporting on progress being made in their annual reports, in respect of contributions to the reduction of CO2 emissions, and other aspects relating to adverse climate change.
The risks posed by global warming, as the IPCC Report shows, should not be taken lightly. Doing nothing threatens the future of the South African economy and the future stability of our country.
The risks posed by the resultant destruction of property and life, cannot be underestimated in terms of the strain this could pose for social cohesion.
Our future now depends on what decisive actions need to be taken as a matter of urgency.
