Family Day – Public Holiday
Family Day History
Family Day celebrates families and emphasis’s the importance of family bonds and quality time spent as a family unit. Originally, the day was used as a recovery from Easter festivities however it is now part of the Easter long weekend and gives families the opportunity to spend additional time together.
Family Day was first celebrated as Easter Monday in 1910. Family Day was renamed as such in 1994 in order to include all religions, as the holiday was originally more Christian. It is celebrated annually on the Monday following Easter.
