African Grey Breeders and Exporters CC is a family owned business which started as a hobby. I started breeding birds as a child and continued with passion breeding mostly parakeets and parrots. In 2004 we decided to register a CC and to start exporting our own birds. The business grew very fast and we had to invest in a small holding where we have enough space to expand the breeding. Our core business is breeding the very popular African Grey parrot for the pet market. It is a bird which is very popular around the world. We also breed Macaws, Amazon parrots and various Australian parakeets.
Our major challenge is to expand our market as only a few countries are allowed to import live birds from South Africa. The bird flu (Avian Influenza) epidemic in the Eastern Cape continues to negatively affect the business. The European Union does not allow any birds from South Africa as a result of the bird flu and only a few of the Middle East countries allow imports of live birds. All imports of wild caught birds into South Africa have been stopped which is now forcing breeders to keep young birds for future breeding stock. The prices of breeding pairs have doubled over the past 2 years.
As part of our business we buy hand reared parrots from breeders across South Africa which we then export in order to satisfy the demand. We are often challenged with the deadly PBFD (Psittacine Beak and Feather disease) which attacks the young birds. It is a virus which is highly contagious and deadly. Most young parrots die when they contract the decease. There are lab tests available and all the young birds that we export are tested. Many laboratories and universities have done research to develop a vaccine but funding the research is challenging and is normally stopped as a result.
We are members of the Parrot Breeders Association of South Africa since 2006. We are passionate about birds and believe that we have helped a great deal in conserving the wild population.
